Almost everyone here left a face behind — a marble bust, a bronze head, a coin struck in his own reign, a portrait painted from life. Time took the colour, the inlaid eyes, the gilding and often the nose. Each medallion sets what survives beside a painted portrait that puts those things back. Open one to see the two side by side.
